Ocean Trigger by J. Holloway
Mighty oceanic depths,
Emotions smash to form
Impassable mountains.
Growing reefs delight
In the calm current’s warmth,
A mother’s caress
After another nightmare.
Whispered conversation creates Heavens, life-giving breaths
Against this briny cloak,
The darkness,
In your favor.
Four billion years’ pressure
Through crags and caverns,
Seething, gaping mouths
Of critics spurned.
Flowering coral, iridescent brains,
Streaming kelp grasp
Newly-formed rock,
Hardened shelves
Of impassioned magma,
As tectonic plates shift
In my favor.
Hiss, then dissipate
Amidst the flora and fauna,
Purpose beneath the surface.
Canthidermis maculata,
Eyes aware, always prepared,
Know the truth.
In the moments to come,
We’ll reach beyond
These once-frightful fathoms,
As Picasso’s inspiration
humuhumunukunukuapua’a
Has flourished in shallow pools.
Closer to the sun,
We brightly emerge
To the crashing waves’ applause.
Scraping against the coarse stone,
The ever-changing tide ebbs
Yet will soon turn
In our favor.
